Man’s life saved after being buried in collapsed, muddy trench in Weber County

WEBER COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A man’s life was saved Monday after a fellow construction worker dug him out of a muddy trench that had collapsed and buried him, according to the Weber County Fire District.

At around 9:45 a.m. on Jan. 29, a man in his late 20s working at a construction site entered a trench that was reportedly muddy. The trench collapsed and buried the man, according to David Reed, Weber County Fire.

Another man working next door reportedly came to help, using a backhoe to get as close to the man as possible and dig him out.

“It looked as though he at least broke his femur,” Reed said.

The man was conscious but taken to the hospital in critical condition. No one else was hurt in the incident.

Officials said the workers on-site saved the man’s life.

“When you are working in trenches deeper than four feet, you need to use trench blocking to prevent collapse. Make sure you shore up the sides and have support,” Reed said.
