Man missing after thunderstorm washed him into Mississippi River while exploring tunnels

Aug. 29—A man is still missing after he was washed into the Mississippi River with two others after a thunderstorm hit while a group was exploring tunnels in St. Paul near the Marshall Avenue bridge.

Ramsey County water patrol, St. Paul police, St. Paul fire and Minneapolis fire were called about 12:48 a.m. Sunday to the water rescue, according to Roy Magnuson, spokesman for the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office.

Five adults were exploring the tunnels when the thunderstorm hit. Two were able to escape but three others were washed into the river. Minneapolis fire officials were able to rescue two of the three adults who washed into the river.

One man remains missing Sunday afternoon. His four companions were turned over to the St. Paul police department.

Search efforts were continuing Sunday.
