Man near vehicle stopped on I-75 shoulder killed in multi-vehicle crash

A man near a vehicle stopped on the side of I-75 was killed when he was struck by another vehicle Sunday evening.

A man and a child in another stopped vehicle were also injured in the multi-vehicle crash, according to the Cincinnati Police Department.

Cincinnati Police Department’s Traffic Unit responded to Interstate 75 northbound at the 2.3-mile marker to investigate the crash just before 5:15 p.m.

Matthew Hayden, 42, was operating a blue Chevrolet Silverado on northbound I-75 and was driving outside of marked lanes when he struck the rear of a blue Chevrolet Cobalt that was stopped on the right shoulder, according to CPD.

The Chevrolet Cobalt was then pushed into George Jordan, 62, who was on foot, and a stopped white Ford Transit van. Jordan sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the crash site.Police did not say if Jordan had been driving the van or why the vehicles were stopped.

The Chevrolet Silverado driven by Hayden then struck a blue Infiniti Q70L, according to CPD.

Charlie Harris, 71, was in the front seat of the Cobalt that was struck and a 7-year-old boy was in the back seat. Police did not name the boy.

Harris was transported by the Cincinnati Fire Department to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition. The 7-year-old boy was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.

Hayden was not injured as a result of the crash. Police did not provide information on the occupants of the Infiniti Q70L and their conditions.

Excessive speed and impairment are being investigated as factors in this crash.

The highway was shut down for nearly to six hours Sunday evening as police investigated, according to news reports.
