Man purchases Illinois Lottery ticket at metro-east grocery and walks away with big prize

A customer who regularly patronizes a Dierbergs in Shiloh lucked out and won more than $270,000 in a Fast Play Illinois Lottery game Tuesday.

The lucky player won $277,728 on Fast Play Twenty 20s, a game where the jackpot starts at $50,000 and increases as tickets are sold across the state. The ticket was purchased at the Dierbergs grocery store located at 4000 Green Mount Crossing Drive in Shiloh.

“I was working when a regular customer who usually stops in a few times a week, bought a Fast Play lottery ticket and ended up winning over $270,000 — how incredibly lucky!” Tamara Krueger, supervisor at Dierbergs Green Mount Crossing, said in a Thursday Illinois Lottery press release. “I told him, he needs to share his luck with me.”

The release did not identify the winner.

In Twenty 20s, players must attempt to find 20s with increasing prizes for the number found. The game’s overall odds of winning are 1 in 3.27, according to Illinois Lottery, though prize amounts vary. The progressive jackpot is at $99,972, as of Thursday.

The same Dierbergs location sold another jackpot-winning ticket at least one other time in recent history.

“In September 2016, a local Shiloh man stopped in to buy some chicken for dinner and walked out of the store winning $2 million on a scratch-off ticket — I’ll never forget that day, it was pretty exciting,” Krueger said in the statement.

Tuesday saw nearly 37,000 Illinois residents win Fast Play prizes, totaling more than $862,000 in wins across the Land of Lincoln.

Thursday night will bring another opportunity for Illinois lottery players to cash in, as the Lotto jackpot has grown to $22.4 million, according to a different Thursday Illinois Lottery statement.

If someone wins the Lotto Thursday, it will mark the biggest Lotto jackpot of the year.

The Lotto game is played exclusively in Illinois and drawings are held Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. More than 6.1 million winning Lotto tickets have been sold so far this year, with nearly $25 million won.
