Man reading book stabbed 9 times by stranger in NYC Port Authority Bus Terminal

A man reading at book at Manhattan’s Port Authority Bus Terminal early Monday was stabbed and wounded by a crazed stranger in an unprovoked attack, police source said.

The 65-year-old victim was sitting reading a book in the Greyhound area of the busy Midtown station when he was stabbed six times in the front of the neck, two times in the back of the neck and one time in the right arm at about 5:40 a.m., police said.

Port Authority Police officers Jordan Eugenis and Anthonio Peterson were patrolling one level above inside the terminal on W. 42nd St. and Eighth Ave. when they heard the victim screaming. The officers ran downstairs, saw a struggle and broke it up, only to realize one of the men was holding a four-inch knife, sources said.

Drawing their guns, they ordered the man brandishing the blade to drop it twice before he did so.

Michael McCloskey, 42, of Watsonville, Calif., was taken into custody. He is charged with attempted murder, assault, menacing and weapons possession, according to police.

McCloskey has an outstanding warrant in his hometown for vandalism and committing a hate crime. He may be extradited to California after facing charges for Monday’s attack.

Medics took the victim to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. He is a construction worker from New Jersey, according to police sources, and was waiting to meet a co-worker when he was attacked.

According to NYPD data, there have been 169 felony assaults so far this year in the Midtown South Precinct where the Port Authority Bus Terminal is located, down from 172 by this time last year.
