Man receives 3 life sentences for killing woman at gas station
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man convicted of killing a 65-year-old woman at a Harris Teeter gas station received three life sentences.
Commonwealth’s Attorney for the city of Virginia Beach, Colin D. Stolle announced Tuesday that 25-year-old Darrius Cornell White, of Chesapeake, was sentenced for charges of aggravated murder, two counts robbery causing death and three counts of use of firearm.
When pronouncing his sentence, Judge James C. Lewis told White, “Your DNA has an evil streak that can’t be rehabilitated, changed, or eliminated.”
The Commonwealth presented evidence that proved Darrius White and his brother Michael White, while driving a stolen car, pulled up to a pump near Annie Smith and her husband, Stephen, while they were getting gas at the Harris Teeter in the Haygood Shopping Center.
Michael, with his face covered by a bandana, jumped out of the car and robbed Stephen Smith at gunpoint. Darrius White then demanded property from Annie Smith and ultimately shot her three times in the chest.

The White brothers then fled to Chesapeake with Annie Smith’s firearm that was concealed in the Smith’s vehicle.
A short time later, the owner of the stolen vehicle spotted the Whites driving his car, which led the Whites to ditch the vehicle.
Police found the White brothers’ fingerprints all over the vehicle after processing it for evidence.
On Dec. 15 at around midnight, both of the Whites went to the hospital claiming to be suicidal. They both later confessed to their involvement in the murder and robbery of Annie Smith.
Michael White pled guilty to charges of two counts of first degree murder causing death, three counts of use of a firearm and possession of firearm by convicted felon. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Darrius White has an extensive criminal record that include convictions for charges of assault by mob, assault and battery of a law enforcement officer, multiple obscene
display and indecent exposure charges, and probation violations.
