Man reels in two fish of identical weight and length — breaking Missouri state record

For 32 years, a 10-ounce flier caught from a private pond held a Missouri state fishing record.

But on March 26, Tyler Goodale reeled in two fliers of identical weight and length, according to an April 10 news release from the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Those “record-worthy” fliers weighed 11 ounces, authorities said. State wildlife officials verified the weight of both fish with a certified scale in Wappapello.

Goodale, of Doniphan, caught the fish while using a pole and line at Duck Creek Conservation Area, according to the release.

The previous record holder — Anthony W. Sifford, of Puxico — caught his flier from a farm pond on March 15, 1991, records show.

While fliers are a “species of conservation concern” in Missouri, officials said their largest populations in the state can be found at Duck Creek Wildlife Area and Mingo National Wildlife Refuge.

This is Goodale’s second state record fish caught from Duck Creek Conservation Area, officials said. In April 2020, he caught a 5-pound, 4-ounce spotted sucker that also holds a world record.

Duck Creek Conservation Area is in the southeast corner of Missouri.
