A man on Wednesday killed his mother and teenage sister at their west Mesa apartment home before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide case, according to authorities.

Police said officers responding to a 7:35 p.m. call about a possible shooting at Mesa Park Apartments on West 8th Avenue near South Country Club Drive were met by the male caller. The man explained he lived in the apartment with his 46-year-old girlfriend and her 21-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter, and that when he came home from work he found the three dead, police said.

Officers entered the apartment and confirmed all three were dead, each person in a different room in the apartment, according to police.

Detectives' preliminary investigation uncovered evidence showing the deaths were a murder-suicide where the son shot his mother and sister before shooting himself.

"It is very early in the investigation and details may change as the investigation continues," Mesa police said in a Wednesday morning statement.

The names of the three will be released later on Wednesday pending notification of additional family members, police added.
