A man on roller skates stabbed two people on a busy street in broad daylight.

Police were called to reports of a man on roller skates attacking people in Wells Road, Bristol, on Tuesday afternoon.

A Taser was used to detain the attacker after he also threatened two police officers with a knife as they arrived at the scene.

The man, in his 30s, was arrested and taken into police custody, where he remains. A knife was recovered from the scene.

Two men, one in his 20s and the other in his 50s, were taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary for treatment after being stabbed.

Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

A third man, also in his 20s, was taken to the same hospital for a head injury but has since been discharged.

Chief Inspector Nigel Colston, neighbourhood commander for South Bristol, praised several members of the public who intervened during the attack – which is not being treated as terror-related.

He added: “This kind of incident is extremely rare in Bristol and, while we’re keeping an open mind about it, I’d like to reassure people we do not believe it to be terrorism.

“Several members of the public bravely intervened in the incident and I’d like to praise their bravery and thank them for their assistance.

“South Bristol is a safe area and they demonstrated great courage and community spirit when faced with a very unusual incident.

“I’d also like to thank the two officers who detained a man who threatened to cause them harm.

“No one should be threated while at work and the way they dealt with the situation was a credit to themselves and to Avon and Somerset Police.”

Neighbourhood officers will be carrying out reassurance patrols over the next few days, while officers carry out house-to-house and CCTV inquiries.
