A man was sentenced Wednesday morning after taking a plea deal in connection with a 2021 fatal shooting in Wilmington.

A man charged with murder in 2021 was sentenced in New Hanover County Superior Court on Wednesday.

Adrian Point was sentenced to 24-29 years in jail. On Tuesday, he took a plea deal, pleading guilty to second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Oarmonz Dikal Days.

The minimum 24-year sentence was "a very important number for the victim’s family because Oarmonz was just three days shy of his 24th birthday when he was killed," said Bradley Matthews, assistant district attorney. "We are happy to get justice for Mr. Days and his family with this plea."

A ShotSpotter alert indicated six shots fired at North Sixth and Nixon streets on March 12, 2021, at 2:44 p.m. Wilmington police officers arrived at the scene and found Days in critical condition.

Days had been shot four times in the back, according to a news release from district attorney Ben David. He was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Point was arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting five days later.

"Video surveillance of the incident depicted a man dressed in all white had walked across Nixon Street towards Days and began shooting him from behind while the victim was in conversation with a friend," according to the release.

Point was identified as the shooter by witnesses on scene and by a Facebook post showing him wearing the same outfit in days prior. He attempted to evade law enforcement by shaving his head and traveling to Latta, South Carolina, in the hours following the fatal shooting.

"Senseless gun violence, such as this, will absolutely not be tolerated in this community," David said.

Judge Frank Jones presided over the sentencing.
