Man sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing a man during a 2020 argument in Wilmington

A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for fatally shooting another man during an argument at a Wilmington auto repair shop in 2020, the Delaware Department of Justice said.

The Department of Justice added that having Timothy Thomas sentenced to 25 years in prison for the killing resolved four other matters that were pending against the Newark-area man. These other cases, which occurred in 2020 and 2021, include charges involving weapons, assaults and theft of a motor vehicle.

"When you commit a crime with a gun, you become our first priority," Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings said in a statement. "This was an excellent result from our team and the Wilmington Police Department. May it bring peace to the victim's family."

Fatal shooting

Thomas was arguing with 37-year-old Andre Hickson on July 6, 2020, at an auto shop near the 800 block of E. 13th St. when the DOJ said Thomas pulled out a gun and shot Hickson in the chest before fleeing the area.

Hickson was taken to an area hospital where he died of his injuries.

Thomas was already incarcerated when he was indicted in mid-2022 on first-degree murder and two weapons charges. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in October and was sentenced earlier this month, according to the DOJ.

"I am proud of the efforts of our detectives in solving this case, and our partnership with the prosecutors who helped secure a conviction in this murder case," Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos said in a statement. "This lengthy prison sentence reaffirms our commitment to delivering justice on behalf of victims of crime, and our resolve to hold violent offenders like this accountable for their actions."
