Man sentenced for killing Leavenworth inmate using plastic food tray

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — A 30-year-old man is sentenced for the death of a fellow inmate in Leavenworth.

In February, a Leavenworth County jury found Richey Ray Farmer guilty of voluntary manslaughter for the 2021 death of Scott Wilson.

Farmer was sentenced on Wednesday, April 10, to 7 years and 4 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections.

At the time, both Farmer and Wilson were inmates at CoreCivic’s Leavenworth Detention Center, according to Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.

According to court documents, n Aug. 2, 2021, Farmer struck Wilson with a plastic food tray and then used his feet to kick and stomp Wilson.

Following the incident, Wilson was taken to a Kansas City area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Farmer would later claim he was acting in self-defense when he struck and kicked Wilson.
