Man sentenced for killing Target coworker who took his lunch

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Virginia (WJW) – A Virginia man who killed his coworker outside Target for taking his lunch was sentenced to prison this week.

According to prosecutors, a judge sentenced 25-year-old Bazen Berhe to 100 years in prison, with 30 years suspended, for the murder of 58-year-old Hernan Leiva.

Court records say Berhe worked at the Target in Bailey’s Crossroads, Virginia.

According to prosecutors, Berhe admitted he was upset after Leiva, who was a janitor at the store, took his lunch from the work fridge.

Prosecutors say Berhe bought a hammer and two knives at the end of his shift and, a couple days later, stabbed and bludgeoned Leiva to death in the parking lot on April 17, 2021.

Investigators say Berhe admitted to the crime. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in October 2023.

“Mr. Leiva’s unnecessary and tragic death leaves behind a grieving family and community, one that will never be the same after such a senseless act of violence,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano said in a press release.
