Man in serious condition after getting attacked by two pit bulls in West Des Moines

Police sirens

A 27-year-old man was fighting for his life in the hospital after being attacked by his two pit bulldogs in West Des Moines on Thursday.

At about 4:05 p.m. on Thursday, West Des Moines police arrived at an apartment complex to find the dogs attacking the unconscious man, their owner, said Sgt. Jason Heintz, a spokesman for the department.

In order to stop what Heintz described as a "vicious attack," officers had to shoot and kill one of the dogs.

"They tried to get the dogs to get away by yelling and other things and they wouldn't stop the attack, so they had no choice," Heintz said.

The other dog fled but later was captured, Heintz said.

The victim was listed in critical condition on Friday, he said.
