Man seriously injured when semi he was driving crashes into tree along US 224

A 39-year-old man was seriously injured Saturday in a pickup and tractor-trailer crash on US Route 224 in Ruggles Township.

The man from Waldorf, Maryland, who was driving commercial tractor-trailer, was taken to University Ashland Samaritan Hospital and later flown by medical helicopter to Summa Akron City Hospital, according to a news release from the Ashland Post of the State Highway Patrol, which notes he had serious visible injuries.

The crashed happened at about 11:35 a.m. Saturday near mile post marker 5. A 1995 Chevrolet pickup, being driven by at 50-year-old Nova man, was traveling westbound on Route 224 and slowed to make a southbound turn into a private driveway. The tractor-trailer was heading west behind the pickup. The two vehicles collided, according to the release. The pickup went off the south side of Route 224 and the semi went off of the northside and struck a tree, the patrol reports.

The pickup driver was not injured, according the the release.

The semi driver was transported from the scene by Firelands Ambulance Service.

US Route 224 was closed in both directions for about one hour. The Ohio Department of Transportation maintained traffic control using temporary traffic signals for about 3 1/2 hours while the scene was cleared.

Others assisting at the scene were the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, Ruggles Troy Volunteer Fire Department and Auer Towing and Recovery of Ashland.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the Patrol.
