Man severely burned in Jackson house fire: police

JACKSON — A 40-year-old township man was severely burned in a fire at his Dahlia Court home early Saturday, police said.

Township Police Officers Michael DeBlasi and Christopher Brown, who were first on the scene of the blaze at 1400 Dahlia Court about 1 a.m., found the resident outside his home, suffering from severe burns to his upper body, police said.

The victim was able to tell police that the fire broke out in an upstairs bathroom and that there was no one else inside the home, police said in a news release issued by Sgt. Michael Friedman.

DeBlasi and Brown entered the home and found thick smoke coming from the second floor of the unit. Meanwhile, other officers arrived and safely evacuated residents from adjoining units.

Fire units from Jackson Mills Station 54, Jackson Station 55 and Southard Fire Company in Howell responded and extinguished the blaze, which was contained to the upstairs bathroom and master bedroom, Friedman said in the news release. It does not appear that the fire damaged any adjoining units, he said..

The fire appears accidental, although the exact cause is under investigation, the news release said.
