Man shoots stepdaughter then fatally shoots himself; stepdaughter in critical condition

A Port Orange man shot his stepdaughter during an argument Wednesday night and then shot himself, police said.

The man died later at the hospital. As of Thursday afternoon, the woman was "stable but still considered critical" according to Port Orange police Detective Michael Wallace.

According to police, the shooting occurred at 7:20 p.m. at the Sanctuary at Westport Apartments at 5400 Coraci Blvd.

When officers arrived at the apartment, they learned that the shooting was a result of a domestic disturbance between the man and his stepdaughter, investigators said.

The man shot his adult stepdaughter once and then turned the gun on himself, police said.

Both the stepfather and the stepdaughter were transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in critical condition. The stepfather died at the hospital shortly after, police said.
