Man shot to death early Thursday at Petersburg's Crater Square Apartments

PETERSBURG – The city recorded its 10th homicide of the year early Thursday morning at an apartment complex on South Crater Road.

Darrell Morton, 33, was shot to death shortly before 2 a.m. at the Crater Square Apartments. Police said he was declared dead at the scene.

No details have been released about motive or suspect information. Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Petersburg’s murder rate this year is on pace with 2022 when 21 homicides were reported. Data from last year showed 10 murders at the halfway point of 2022. This year, nine killings had occurred as of June 30, including four in June.

Nine of the 10 murders in 2023 took place in the second quarter of the year, which covered April, May and June. That is two more than for the same period last year.

Petersburg's 10 homicides of 2023 are:

  • March 14: Javarius Desmore, at 1403 Pin Oaks Drive;

  • April 5: Antonio Walker, at 124 Henrico St.;

  • April 20: Shaun Hankins, at 20 Leavenworth St.;

  • May 24: Brian Chambers, at 2151 N. Jamestown Drive (Budget Inn);

  • May 27: Tewana Williams, at 1025 Talley Ave.,;

  • June 3: Anthony Williams, at 826 N. Gillfield Drive

  • June 17: K'Von Morgan, at 203 Junniper St. (Pecan Acres);

  • June 22: Ke'Asia Powell, in the 800 block of East Wythe Street;

  • June 26: Lucky D. Burruss, at 1607 Berkeley Ave.; and

  • July 6: Darrell Morgan, at 1025 S. Crater Road (Crater Square Apartments).
