Man shot to death outside east Petersburg store is the city's fifth homicide of the year

PETERSBURG — One man was killed and two other people injured following a shooting Tuesday night at a convenience store in the city's east end.

It happened sometime around 7 p.m. at the Petersburg Food Mart and Citgo station in the 1500 block of East Washington Street. The person who was killed was shot in front of the store and died at the scene.

The two people injured were found with non-life threatening injuries at separate locations on Locust Street nearby and High Pearl Street several miles away in the city’s Delectable Heights area. Police maintain they were shot at the store but were unsure how they were able to leave the scene.

A suspect description was also not immediately available.

Police have not released the identity of the man killed. He is the city's fifth homicide victim of 2022.

Petersburg Police say they had to call for backup from other localities after a group of people who knew the dead man had gathered around him and created some tension on the scene. Petersburg Police Chief Travis Christian called it “disheartening.”

“We understand their pain, but it’s also difficult for us to be able to work the scene and effectively work this scene, while we’re trying to control the crowd as well,” Christian said. S
