A 46-year-old man was shot and killed in a targeted attack at a home in the incorporated area west of Cocoa on Tuesday, Brevard County sheriff's investigators reported.

It is the third reported homicide to take place in Brevard since Jan. 1.

The shooting happened about 9:18 a.m. at a home on Uranus Drive. Investigators are reviewing whether the death may be connected to another unspecified investigation underway in the area.

Someone called 911 in Cocoa to report that a person had been shot in the home. Deputies arrived a short time later and found the man, who was known to law enforcement authorities, unresponsive.

"Based on the preliminary investigation it is believed this was a targeted attack and there is no danger to the general public," Tod Goodyear, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, said in a news release.

Sheriff's agents were withholding the man's name as investigators attempt to glean information from potential witnesses who knew the man and potential suspects.

No arrests have been made in the case.
