Man arrested in connection with fatal shooting in Uptown Charlotte, police say
Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are investigating after a man was shot and killed in Uptown Charlotte.
Police were called Saturday around 1:30 a.m. to West Third Street, near Truist Field.
At the scene, they found 27-year-old Ryan Shamel Elliott who had been shot. Elliott later died, according to CMPD.
On Sunday, 26-year-old Joseph Sherman Crawford was arrested in connection with this case.
The preliminary investigation revealed that during the arrest of Crawford, a shot was fired at an unmarked police vehicle that was occupied by a CMPD VCAT Detective.
Shortly after the shooting, a vehicle pursuit was initiated in Gastonia and ultimately ended at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. No officers fired their service weapons during this interaction, according to CMPD.

Crawford was taken into custody and has been charged with 1st-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The Gastonia Police Department is also conducting a separate investigation involving Crawford. The agency may charge him with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and felony fleeing to elude.
