Man shot in the neck, crashes into building on MLK Avenue

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is in critical condition after he was shot in the neck while driving his car Tuesday night.

According to Memphis Police, the incident happened a little after 11 p.m. in the 500 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Avenue.

The passenger, Dejai Ross, who is also the victim’s girlfriend, flagged down officers and told them her boyfriend had been shot in the neck. The black Audi they were in had crashed into a building.

MPD says the victim was taken to Regional One in critical condition.

Ross said she did not know who shot at them or why. She was taken to the hospital for injuries from the crash.

Moments later, police say a woman in a silver Nissan approached them. She wouldn’t give them any information but said she was supposed to meet with her boyfriend but he did not show up.

The woman stated that her boyfriend drove a black Audi. She refused to tell police her boyfriend’s name.

While searching the Audi, officers found a firearm with approximately 13 live rounds in the magazine, a live 9mm round in the cup holder, a live 9mm round in the back seat, and a separate magazine with approximately 12 rounds of an unknown caliber under the front driver seat.

There were also three iPhones, an Apple watch, a wallet containing two Tennessee IDs (one belonging to Ross), and two social security cards (one belonging to Ross, the other was unknown).

Dejai Ross has been charged with Theft of Property $1,000 or less and Unlawful Carrying or Possession of a Weapon related to the guns in the car.

Police did not say whether they were searching for any suspects in the shooting.
