Man shot by police at Canandaigua gas station; investigation underway

New York state and Ontario County authorities are investigating after Canandaigua police officers shot a man who allegedly aimed a gun at them Monday afternoon in downtown Canandaigua.

In a statement, New York State Police said that at 1:29 p.m., Canandaigua officers responded to a report of a suspicious person at a gas station at 484 S. Main St., at Parrish Street.

When officers arrived, they encountered the man whom they described as uncooperative and said he displayed what appeared to be a firearm.

After ignoring the officers’ commands, they discharged a taser, state police said.

The man then tried to flee and pointed a firearm at the officers, who then fired their own weapons, striking the man, state police said.

The man was given aid at the scene and airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital. State police declined to describe his condition.

An investigation into the incident is being handled by the state police, the Ontario County District Attorney’s office, The New York State Attorney General’s Office, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and the Canandaigua Police Department.

No officers were injured during the incident, state police said.

The shooting comes two months after Canandaigua police shot and killed Brandon Zurkan, of Warren, Pennsylvania following an encounter between Zurkan and police.
