Man shot 3 times in the head at Lake Shore Drive stoplight after someone yelled gang slogans at him near Chicago Avenue, cops say

A Cicero man was shot three times in the head, including his nose and eyebrow, after a person made gang signs and shouted gang slogans at him as he waited for a red light to change on Lake Shore Drive near Chicago Avenue late Tuesday, Chicago police said.

Police and paramedics were called to the 800 block of North Lake Shore Drive for a report of a shooting about 11:30 p.m., according to a police media notification. A 22-year-old man had suffered multiple graze wounds to the head and drove to the 600 block of Lake Shore Drive where he called authorities, police spokeswoman Kellie Bartoli said in an email.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where his condition was stabilized, according to police, who later said he’d been listed in fair condition. Police said he suffered a through and through gunshot wound to the nose, a bullet lodged in the left side of his head and a graze wound to the left eyebrow.

The man had been driving a 2005 Nissan Altima south on Lake Shore Drive and stopped for a red light, police said. Before he came to a stop, he noticed a white SUV “following him closely,” according to police.

A white Buick SUV pulled up along his driver’s side and people inside the SUV “began yelling gang slogans and fired shots as he drove off,” according to the police statement.

Police said a rear occupant of the SUV was making gang signs and then began shooting. Bartoli said it wasn’t clear whether the shooter was a man or woman and no description of the shooter was available. Investigators weren’t sure how many people were in the SUV at the time, she said.

“A 20-year-old female was also in the victim’s vehicle,” Bartoli said. Police said the woman was the victim’s girlfriend; she was not injured.

There was damage to the driver’s side window of the 22-year-old’s red Altima and detectives pulled bullet fragments from the car, police said. Authorities have pulled surveillance video from the city’s camera system, according to police.

Bartoli said detectives were investigating whether the victim is affiliated with a gang. But police said he has no known gang affiliation.

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday morning.
