Man shot, wounded in clash with Staten Island neighbor

A Staten Island man was wounded in a shooting early Sunday in what police describe as a clash between neighbors.

The 41-year-old victim was shot in the chest on Pompey Ave. near Wilson Ave. in Eltingville about 12:30 a.m., cops said.

Medics took the victim to Staten Island University Hospital North in stable condition.

Cops took a person of interest into custody after the shooting though charges were still pending, an NYPD spokesman said.

The violence took place in the 123rd Precinct, which saw just one shooting this year through Sept. 24 and not a single shooting in all of 2002, according to NYPD statistics.

The shooting comes a week after the stabbing of 81-year-old Frank Pompilii, who was killed as he tried to break up a fight between neighbors down the block from his Sunnyside Terrace home on Sept. 22
