Man sleeping on Coney Island beach hit, killed by New York City parks department truck

A New York City parks department truck hit and killed a man sleeping on a Coney Island beach early Monday, police said.

Police responded to an incident at 2:48 a.m. Monday in Brooklyn in which a man had been struck on the beach at Stillwell Avenue and Riegelmann Boardwalk, the New York Police Department told USA TODAY.

A New York City Department of Parks & Recreation vehicle, a Ford F-250 pickup, was exiting the beach and struck a 47-year-old man who was sleeping on the beach, police said. The man, whose name police have not yet released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the parks department truck remained at the scene, police said. The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is continuing its investigation.

"This is a horrific tragedy. We are investigating the incident internally," the parks department said in a statement to CBS News.
