Man Steals School Bus, Leads Indiana Cops On Wild Off-Road Chase

What exactly was his plan?

For 47 minutes, a man led Indiana police on a wild chase from behind the wheel of a stolen school bus. The portions of dashcam footage shared by Fox59, which we’ve included, shows the yellow bus cutting through farmers’ fields and even going through a cemetery all in a bid to shake the many police units chasing the suspect down.

The whole story started in Cincinnati, where the man swiped the school bus. He was able to drive through three Indiana counties, triggering a massive chase that involved multiple law enforcement agencies. According to Fox19, the chase ended in a corn field, a detail that’s hard to tell since it’s early in the season. We’ll bet the farmer was pretty unhappy, as were all the others who had their fields plowed a little too early.

According to reports, 32-year-old Chard Murdock was arrested for resisting law enforcement, criminal recklessness with a vehicle, possession of stolen property and criminal mischief. What we want to know was his initial plan in stealing the school bus.

Criminals are often on the dumb side, and that’s probably a good thing. But this guy obviously wasn’t bright enough to realize a big yellow school bus with the lettering of the school district it’s from sticks out like a sore thumb. How he was able to get so far before he was spotted is a mystery, but once police found him he was done.

Instead of just pulling over and giving up without a fight, the guy decided to rack up more charges. It’s entirely possible if found guilty a judge will tack on fines to make the farmers whole, not to mention to pay for the damages done to the bus.

Authorities say Murdock stole the bus when the driver stepped off it for a moment. In other words this was likely a crime of opportunity, so Murdock might have just acted out of impulse. Now he’s going to pay a price for that decision.
