Man suspected of shooting two Missouri officers, killing one, surrenders after standoff
A suspect in a shooting that killed one police officer and seriously injured another surrendered Monday afternoon after a standoff that lasted several hours, the Missouri Highway Patrol said on social media.
Kenneth Lee Simpson, 35, exited the Hermann, Missouri, home about 2 p.m. and was taken into custody by the highway patrol’s SWAT team, the highway patrol said.
Simpson is suspected in the shooting of two Herman police officers about 9:20 p.m. Sunday at a Casey’s gas station at 811 Market Street in Hermann. Detective Sgt. Mason Griffith died from his injuries. The other officer remained in serious, but stable condition at a hospital, the highway patrol said.
Shortly after the shooting, the highway patrol issued a blue alert, which signals the search for a suspect when an officer has been seriously wounded or killed in the line of duty.
Shortly before noon Monday, the highway patrol said information gathered overnight led them to believe Simpson was inside a home on Missouri 19 highway in Hermann.
Officers surrounded the home, establishing a perimeter, and had been trying to contact Simpson and use additional tactical resources to take him into custody, the highway patrol said. The highway patrol canceled the blue alert after Simpson was taken into custody.
The highway patrol advised people to continue avoiding the area, saying it was still an active scene.
