OXFORD - The week leading up to Mother’s Day is the busiest week of the year, which is why Saray Doray, owner of Ladybug Florist, was too exhausted to be bothered by the loud pop that came from the street in front of her house and business at 407 Main St. Sunday morning.

After Doray walked downstairs and into the outside to walk her dog not long after the pop, she saw yellow tape only a few feet away from the front entrance of her home and store. A puddle of blood marked the middle of area closed in by the tape, she said.

According to authorities, an Oxford police officer had shot a man who had been allegedly wielding a sword in the officer's direction around 6 a.m. Sunday.

Doray, who said her 2-year-old daughter sleeps in the bedroom closest to the street, stood in front of the scene in shock.

“We don’t live in the city for this reason,” Doray said hours later, as she wrapped another order Sunday afternoon. “I lived in Worcester for 10 years, but I moved to Oxford once I got pregnant.”

Investigation underway

Immediately after the shooting, the man was transported to a nearby hospital where he continues to be treated.

The police officer was put on paid administrative leave, while the incident remains under investigation by Oxford police and state police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.

Doray’s shop, which saw a busy Mother’s Day despite the shooting, was limited to pick-up orders for the rest of the day Sunday while authorities investigated the nearby scene.

The shop has a second location in Leicester.
