Man, teen accused of passing counterfeit money

SOLON, Ohio (WJW) — Solon police earlier this month arrested a 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy during an investigation into counterfeit money being passed in the city.

A 19-year-old Solon man told police he was scammed while selling an iMac computer via Facebook Marketplace, according to a news release from Solon police Lt. William Vajdich.

He arranged a sale with a man identifying as Aaron Rhon, which investigators think may be an alias. The seller met with two men just after 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, in the parking lot of the Giant Eagle along Aurora Road for the exchange.

The seller was handed $150 in bills, which he later noticed was actually prop money, only good for “motion picture use,” according to the release.

The following Tuesday, Feb. 6, an employee of the Mobil Gas Station along Aurora Road said he was given counterfeit $20 bills while selling a video game console via Facebook Marketplace.

Police found a 17-year-old boy carrying an e-cigarette, suspected marijuana and 13 more counterfeit $20 bills marked for “Motion Picture Use,” which were seized, according to Vajdich.

With him was 20-year-old Christian Turner, of Solon, who was arrested on a felony charge of counterfeiting, police said.

The teen was transported to the city police department, then released to a parent, and for follow-up with a juvenile officer.

Court records show Turner posted 10% of his $5,000 bond following his arraignment on Feb. 7. He’s due back in court on Feb. 28.
