Man from Unionville dies after fall from cliff while hiking in Nevada

Members of a Monroe County family are grieving this weekend over the death of 22-year-old Bloomington High School North graduate who died last week hiking at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada.

Rescue workers discovered the body of Luke Saunders Thursday night while searching where he was last known to be. They looked hours for the Air Force member, at first finding his backpack and then seeing his body about 250 below a steep cliff, according to Las Vegas news reports.

Saunders was last seen about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, near the Spring Mountain/Red Rock Canyon area in the desert west of Las Vegas.

The next day, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department issued a missing persons notice describing Saunders, saying he might need medical attention and asking anyone who had seen him to contact police.

Saunders' parents are Monroe County residents Tina Skirvin and Mike Saunders, and he grew up in Unionville. His family issued a statement that described him as a helicopter mechanic in the Air Force "loved by those he served with.”
