Man waiting for Manhattan subway whacked in head with hammer by stranger in random attack

A 46-year-old man waiting for a train inside a Manhattan subway station was hit in the head with a hammer in an unprovoked attack from a stranger, police said Tuesday.

The victim was waiting for a downtown A train when the assailant came up from behind and struck him in the head with the hammer inside the 175th St. station in Washington Heights about 11 a.m. Sunday, cops said.

The wounded man went to a station booth for help while his attacker ran off.

The victim suffered minor bruising. He was treated at the scene, declining further medical attention.

Cops released surveillance images of the suspect Tuesday and asked the public’s help tracking him down.
