Salem Police said Thursday they are referring charges to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office for a 29-year-old man wanted for multiple alleged crimes who was sent to the hospital Tuesday after police attempted to arrest him.

Police say the decision to refer the charges to the DA's office were due to the anticipated length of care required for the man.

Black Joy Oregon protesters against police violence gathered Thursday night outside of Salem Health where the man was taken.

Salem Police say at 3 p.m. Tuesday an officer spotted the man near Nebraska and 16th streets northeast. The man attempted to flee and was injured by police during the attempted arrest.

Police said Thursday the officer used a Taser, causing the man to fall and strike his head on the ground. No other use of force was used. Police say the officer was uninjured. Since the incident did not lead to a deadly use of force the officer has not been put on leave, according to police.

The man was given medical attention by paramedics before being taken to Salem Health for his injuries, according to police.

Police said there was a statewide felony warrant for the man for a probation violation on domestic assault. The man was also wanted for alleged first degree burglary in three separate cases. Salem Police have released the man from police custody.
