Man whose car was used in fatal shooting of 3-year-old Trinity Randolph will do probation

Evan Ross, convicted of helping to facilitate the murder of 3-year-old Trinity Randolph and her father, will now serve supervised probation instead of prison time, according to court records.

Police previously arrested Ross, 28, and charged him with two counts of facilitation of murder and one count of facilitation of first-degree burglary for the fatal shootings of Trinity and 21-year-old Brandon Waddles at their home in southern Louisville in August 2020.

Ross pleaded guilty to the charges, and Jefferson Circuit Judge McKay Chauvin sentenced him Wednesday to five years of supervised probation, with Ross facing the possibility of 10 years in prison if he reoffends during that time, said First Assistant Erwin Roberts with the Commonwealth Attorney's office.

The sentence was given "in consideration of his cooperation and limited role in the crime, as well as safety concerns as a result of his plea agreement," Roberts said.

According to the arrest citation, Ross' vehicle was spotted on surveillance footage near the location of the shooting on Kahlert Avenue in the Jacobs neighborhood. Police found the vehicle about five blocks away on Powell Avenue.

After being interviewed by homicide detectives, Ross admitted that he was involved in the double homicide. He has a long list of misdemeanor convictions but no prior felonies.

"As part of the plea, Evan Ross has agreed to continue to provide truthful information, including at the trial of Kevon Lawless which is currently scheduled for September 9," Roberts said.

Kevon Lawless, 23, is accused of shooting Randolph and Waddles. He had initially been held in Louisville Metro Corrections on a $1 million bond after he was arrested and charged with two counts of complicity to murder and one count each of complicity to first-degree burglary and possessing a handgun as a convicted felon.

Lawless' bond was then lowered to $300,000, which he posted. Randolph's family says they were not notified of Lawless' release. His case is ongoing in the Jefferson County Circuit Court, with a jury trial scheduled for Sep. 9.
