Man and woman rescued after boat catches fire near Joe's Bayou boat ramp in Destin

A man and woman were rescued from the water after their boat caught fire in Joe's Bayou on Saturday.

Destin firefighters responded Saturday afternoon to the boat fire, according to Facebook posts by the fire department and the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

According to the sheriff's office post, the occupants tried to extinguish the blaze but were unsuccessful and had to abandon the boat. Okaloosa County Sheriff's Deputy Andy Maltais retrieved a man and a woman from the water and took them to the nearby boat ramp.

Maltais and an Eglin Police Marine Unit kept the flaming boat away from a private boat and dock by using their boat wakes to push it against a strong wind. Destin Fire and Rescue personnel on Destin Fire Boat 9 extinguished the fire.

There were no reported injuries.
