A man suffered a slash across the abdomen Saturday morning before officers confronted a knife-wielding suspect who was facing off with another man, police said.

Officers were sent at 9:40 a.m. to a report of a disturbance in the area of 140 Hilliard St., where they found a man holding a large knife pointed at another man, police spokesman Lt. Ryan Shea said.

After being told to drop the knife, the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Kelvin McCullough of Hartford, threw the knife to the ground and was detained, Shea said. The other man immediately told officers that someone was stabbed and needed help.

Officers found a Bridgeport man, age 33, inside the entrance to the building suffering from a large laceration to the abdomen, Shea said. Officers and paramedics rendered medical aid, and the victim was taken to Hartford Hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

McCullough was being held on an active warrant out of Hartford and charges related to the Manchester incident were pending, Shea said. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. James Graham at 860-645-5519, or the main police line at 860-645-5500.
