Borussia Dortmund have told Manchester United they will only accept £108 million for Jadon Sancho after an offer was rejected for the England forward, with former captain Gary Neville accusing his old club of being “appalling” in the market this window.

United have spoken to Sancho’s Bundesliga club over striking a late deal in the window for their No 1 target but the number put forward was below the asking price, which has not changed over the summer.

The 20 year-old was not included in his team’s German Super Cup clash against Bayern Munich this week as he was suffering from a respiratory infection. United have until Monday to improve their offer if they are to land the player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants in the right-wing position at Old Trafford.

Sancho has extended his contract at Dortmund to 2023 which means his club are under no immediate pressure to reduce their asking price of €120m. They wanted any deal done by Aug 10 so they could prepare for the season but would consider a deal if their valuation is met.

United have looked at alternatives to Sancho as the deal for him has proved difficult to complete. Watford’s Ismaila Sarr was subject of an enquiry following their relegation to the Championship, with his club insisting they would only entertain a permanent deal for the Senegal forward.

United also have an interest in Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele on a loan deal for the season but there are doubts over the France international's willingness to leave the Nou Camp.

Neville has lamented his old club's ability to buy and sell players this window. He also retweeted Jason Burt’s interview with Sevilla director of football Monchi, where the Spaniard questions why United do not have a similar role to his.

“It’s appalling that in this market which is probably the easiest in PL history to get transfers done that United haven’t done more yet!” wrote Neville on Twitter. “They must get Ole a CB , LB and Forward pre deadline! The others are managing to get things over the line why not United!”

When accused of putting pressure on United to panic buy in the market, he replied: “Panic Buy! They’ve needed these positions filling for 12 months, had a national lockdown to regroup and re-set and ample time to manoeuvre deals to a conclusion.”
