The Mandalorian's Latest Mystery Character Could Be Literally Anybody

From Men's Health

Spoiler warning: the following story contains spoilers for the end of The Mandalorian's fifth episode.

  • The end of The Mandalorian's fifth episode teases a mysterious new character.

  • This could be anyone: Boba Fett, another villain, a totally new character.

  • Our money is on this being Moff Gideon, the villain played by Giancarlo Esposito.

At the close of The Mandalorian's fifth episode, we see the feet, and long black cape of a mysterious figure approaching the fallen body of Fennec Shand. As the figure kneels next to the body, the show cuts to the credits and we're left to wonder who this could possibly be. Boba Fett? Could it be someone bigger? The answer, most likely, is none of the above, but still a formidable foe nonetheless: a former imperial officer named Moff Gideon, played by Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito.

As we've seen in much of the show's pre-release promotional material, Gideon is a former imperial officer who now commands his own rogue group of storm troopers. If you look at the picture released, he wears black, and a cape, just like the figure depicted at the end of the episode here.

Also, as we learned earlier, Fennec Shand was on her way to a rendezvous, and had previously worked with all the major crime syndicates. Just as we saw The Mandalorian take a job with an imperial figure in Werner Herzog's The Client—who initially sent him to retrieve Baby Yoda—Fennec Shand could have taken a job with Moff Gideon. It's likely that she was set to rendezvous with him, and this is why he went to find her.

It sets up an interesting story for the coming weeks; Moff Gideon would certainly seem to be set up as the series' primary villain, at least as of now. He doesn't seem to be versed in the force like a Darth Vader or Kylo Ren, but rather some sort of hybrid between Ben Mendelsohn's Orson Krennic (a loose cannon bureaucratic villain in Rogue One) and a Boba Fett-esque fighter.

That said, it's not certain that's who this is. Maybe it could be Boba Fett! There are others from the canon, such as Cobb Vanth, who could also be involved here as well. But most likely, we're thinking that this is just the right time for Giancarlo Esposito to bring another one of his signature villains into the picture.
