The Mandalorian season three begins airing on Disney+ on March 1 after more than two years away.

Sure, we got those bonus episodes in the middle of last year's The Book of Boba Fett, but it's been a while since we spent some quality time with everyone's favourite space daddy.

But with The Mandalorian season three promising bigger, more epic stakes than the show's previous monster-of-the-week stories, fans might be curious whether the show's heart will remain the same.

To find out, Digital Spy sat down with Pedro Pascal, aka the internet's boyfriend, to talk all things Din and Grogu.

So we've been waiting a while for season three and fans are excited…

I know… well, you got Book of Boba Fett – stop complaining! [Laughs]

What about you? Do you still get excited to put the armour on every time?

Yes. There's always an initial moment of feeling like the biggest badass in the world, and then the aches and pain start to emerge.

And has your approach to playing Din (aka Mando) changed over the years?

So much of it has changed over the years, including the execution of the show, which is kind of amazing.

The way that John Favreau and Dave Filoni started with season one, went into all of the surprises of season two, bridged season two and season three with the Book of Boba Fett, and continued to expand on the world.

And in a way, they improvised their approach each time. I remember checking in with them and just asking, "Are you guys, okay?" because season three is so epic that you've got to wonder how overworked they are.

Without spoiling too much, where do we find ourselves thematically in season three? What's the scope that we're dealing with?

So, there are more Mandalorians [laughs].

We've seen.

I think that's a beautiful aspect [of season three] in terms of expanding the lore around Mandalore and including more characters and expanding on the coolness – because Mandalorians are so cool.

The Creed and the culture around it have so many interesting facets that are relatable to society for us, and to get more into the flesh of that, under the armour, is fascinating.

And when I said ‘epic’ earlier, I don't mean it in a typical sort of Star Wars fashion. I mean related to what season three does visually and narratively, it's pretty epic.

Over the course of the show you can track a tension between Din’s understanding of his heritage, being a foundling, and the found-family aspect of what he and Grogu are building. Is that something that gets explored in season three?

It's such a beautiful dynamic that exists between Din and Grogu; protector, protected. And how that dynamic can be reversed, and that there's so much layering within their relationship.

So I would just say that what is initially, or instantly, rich about their dynamic becomes more available to us in season three. What disarms us about this relationship continues to grow and that's a fun thing.

Can you speak a bit more specifically about how that dynamic with Grogu, post-Book of Boba Fett, is changing?

In terms of what was instantly relatable within the relationship. It doesn't limit itself to that kind of immediate charm, if that makes sense?

The show introduced something that we fell in love with so quickly, but then there's just so much more to do with it and explore.

Different levels of that relationship, that bond, growing stronger and there being conflict – and you know a shift in the power dynamic, not power over one another, but who needs what from each other in which instance.

Which is like every parental relationship right?

No this is the first time it’s ever happened, what we're doing is we're inventing parenting. [Laughs]

The other core relationship that people are curious about is Din and Bo Katan. Can you tease anything about where they find themselves after the fallout of the Dark Saber stuff?

I mean there wasn't really a fallout necessarily – sort of kind of an accident.

You picked it up.

Din picked it up and is desperate to give it back to her. But it has to be earned in a very specific way. I think what I'm most excited about as far as season three is concerned, is what we get to see Katee do.

As a fan of The Clone Wars, seeing that character realized and seeing Katee brought back for it is just so exciting.

Totally. Boss Bo Katan.

Finally, were there any (without naming names) guest stars or moments in season three that you’re excited for fans to see?

The answer to that is yes, period [laughs].

Well, we're excited.

You should be.

The Mandalorian season 3 premieres on Disney+ March 1st, and seasons 1-2 are available on the platform now.
