Cape Town – A portrait of the late former President, Nelson Mandela, was auctioned off for R1 million at Cape Town’s Stephen Welz & Co Auction house on Wednesday night, reported Eyewitness News.

The portrait was painted by British royal portrait painter Richard Stone in 2008, and was one of many Mandela memorabilia that were sold during the auction.

The proceeds from the painting will go towards the Community and Individual Development Association City Campus.

A signed Stone print of the Mandela portrait was also sold for R165 000. Those proceeds will go towards the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

A Jürgen Schadeberg photograph of Mandela also went under the hammer for R190000. The photograph was taken of Mandela’s first visit to Robben Island after his release in 1990. It shows the former President looking out of the barred window in his old prison cell.

“This is one of an edition of 20 but not all were signed. I know of probably six in the world that were signed by both Mandela and Schadeberg and they aren’t all the same image,” auctioneer Anton Welz told EWN.

The rare image was so prized, it went for double its original value of between R70 000 and R10 000.

The photograph was voted one of the top 50 most memorable images of the twentieth century by London-based The Photographers Gallery.
