Mandy Moore Reflects on Everything That Has Happened After Speaking Out About Ryan Adams

This Is Us actor and singer Mandy Moore is opening up about the overwhelming response she’s received to speaking out about the alleged abuse she claims she experienced during her marriage to her now-ex-husband, Ryan Adams. It’s only been a few weeks since Moore went on record with the allegations about her ex but the more we’re glad that she did in the first place. Now, she’s comfortable reflecting on the big takeaways from this experience.

“That’s something that I’ve really kind of taken out of this situation. I had no idea [others were dealing with the same thing],” Moore told Us Weekly about the takeaways from speaking up about Adams. “So many women reached out to me, echoing […] that the idea that psychological and emotional is often swept under the rug, or not addressed or not talked about, or not considered in the same category of just general abuse.”

Moore was stunned to learn that so many others had experienced — or were currently experiencing — the very same abuse she had described in a New York Times report published in February. To be clear: Six other women were involved, all alleging extremely specific and similar details of their treatment in relationships with Adams. Moore alleged at the time that Adams was controlling with her, going so far as to control her music career, saying, “Music was a point of control for him. He would always tell me, ‘You’re not a real musician, because you don’t play an instrument. His controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid- to late 20s.”

“I’ve just been really emboldened by the support that, I think, myself and the other women what have spoken out in this particular situation have received. It’s really heartening,” Moore said. “And heartening to know that other women can look to it as an example as well. Like, ‘You’re not alone. You’re seen. You’re heard. You’re acknowledged. It’s real. And I’m so sorry.'”

Moore retweeted this telling post on Twitter this Valentine’s Day that seems to echo her words about Adams:

Adams spoke to Us after the exposé listing Moore’s allegations came out: “I am not a perfect man and I have made many mistakes. To anyone I have ever hurt, however unintentionally, I apologize deeply and unreservedly.”

The singer continued, “But the picture that this article paints is upsettingly inaccurate. Some of its details are misrepresented; some are exaggerated; some are outright false. I would never have inappropriate interactions with someone I thought was underage. Period. As someone who has always tried to spread joy through my music and my life, hearing that some people believe I caused them pain saddens me greatly. I am resolved to work to be the best man I can be. And I wish everyone compassion, understanding and healing.”

An insider told Us after Ryan’s statement was published that Moore had to speak: “He totally damaged her. [Then] she heard from others who were victims as well, and she just couldn’t stay quiet anymore. The good thing is that Mandy finally found the strength to leave him.”

We’ll never know what went down between Adams and Moore. But we’re happy that Moore’s words are empowering others. Moore is now enjoying both professional and personal success. She married Taylor Goldsmith in November 2018, and This Is Us, in which she stars, continues to be one of NBC’s top hits.
