A manicure machine at the airport? Here’s how it works

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Artificial intelligence is making its mark in a way you may not expect at the Will Rogers World Airport.

While your flight may be delayed, your manicure won’t be.

On the other side of TSA are a number of shops and restaurants run by Paradies Lagardere’s. Inside their store, The Apartment, is the manicure machine made by Clockwork.

“We call it a nail robot,” said Tim Thorton, GM of Paradies Lagardere’s.

It uses a printer to polish natural nails with paint for $15.

“We’ve only been open a week and we already have a lot of people coming to the store just to check it out,” said Thorton.

Bretta Stribel was shopping around before her flight and became intrigued. After she scanned the QR code to make the appointment, her manicure was cleared for take off.

The machine helped her remove her old polish, gave her a file to prep her own nails, before guiding her through the steps with a video.

Once she placed a finger on the device, the machine’s camera took a picture. Then it was time to tell the machine to start with the push of a button or her voice.

The polish outlined the unique shape of her nail, filling it in with one thick coat.

“It honestly looks better than when a nail tech does it,” said Stribel.

If she has a turbulent experience, there’s a safety net.

“There is an I.T. expert watching every manicure that the robot performs so that if your hand is slightly turned the wrong way or something, they can kind of coach you through,” said Thorton.

At the end, Stribel touched up a bit, using the tools provided, before boarding her flight.

“When someone goes ‘Your nails look so good, what are you going to tell them?” asked News 4. “‘A robot did it,'” Stribel replied.

Thorton said there are fewer than 20 of these nail robots in the country. Only about four can be found in airports, including Will Rogers.
