Manitowoc could get a roundabout near Walgreens, and more in ‘Watchdog Wednesday’

MANITOWOC — Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing installing a roundabout at the intersection of Calumet Avenue and Custer Street.

The project was presented during a public information meeting Oct. 23 and includes multiple street improvements for the stretch of State 42 between Interstate 43 and South Eighth Street.

The project is still in very early stages with a final design expected in 2028 and construction in 2029 and 2030.

The potential conversion of Washington Street to a two-lane road with a turning lane, bike lanes and on-street parking is also included in the project.

Hamilton Wood Type, Grotegut Dairy Farm to be featured in 'Wisconsin Life' episode

Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum and Grotegut Dairy Farm will be highlighted in an upcoming episode of Wisconsin Life on PBS.

Rosario Ibarra, the general manager for Grotegut Dairy Farm, will share how she moved to Wisconsin more than a decade ago, finally saw her first live Holstein cow, and now runs one of the largest dairy farms in Manitowoc County.

The episode will also tell the history of wood type in Two Rivers, which began with the Hamilton Manufacturing Company in the late 1800s. Georgianne Liesch, a wood type cutter at Hamilton, will demonstrate antique font-cutting practices.

The episode will air at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 on PBS Wisconsin and at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 on WMVT.

Wisconsin Life is a series that features inspiring people from all walks of life, according to a press release from PBS.

Two Rivers middle school begins remodel

The Two Rivers Public School District held a groundbreaking Oct. 24 at L.B. Clarke Middle School.

The school will be under construction starting in 2024 and will receive two additions, a new gymnasium on the west side of the school and additional classrooms on the north side of the school.

The remodel will also include improvements to existing classrooms, a technical education space, building and electrical updates, an expanded cafeteria, parking, and safety and security updates.

The remodel will be funded from money received as part of a $38.7 million referendum passed during the 2022 fall election.

Manitowoc council approves hiring city attorney

Eric Nycz was approved by the Manitowoc Common Council to stay on permanently as city attorney.

Nycz has been serving as interim city attorney since May 1. His new position was approved by the council at its meeting Oct. 16.
