MANITOWOC - April Higgins has won the election for Manitowoc County Clerk of Circuit Court.

With 100% of units reporting in Manitowoc County at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Higgins had 19,802 votes while incumbent Lynn Zigmunt had 15,436 votes.

These totals are unofficial until a Board of Canvassers reviews and authenticates the ballots later this week.

The race for Clerk of Circuit Court was the only county-level contested race in Tuesday's midterm election. Sheriff Dan Hartwig and Coroner Curt Green ran unopposed for their positions.

Two Rivers voters approved a $38.7 million school referendum, with 3,190 voting to approve and 1,894 voting to decline. The Two Rivers Public School District intends to use the money to expand L.B. Clarke Middle School and update safety and technology needs throughout the district.

Three towns in Manitowoc County also had a referendum to vote on. The towns of Gibson, Kossuth and Schleswig asked voters if the people holding the positions of town clerk and town treasurer should be appointed by the town board of each respective community. In Gibson, 389 voted yes and 295 voted no; in Kossuth, 584 voted yes and 419 voted no; and in Schleswig, 588 voted yes and 483 voted no.

At 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, approximately 62% of the votes were counted for State Assembly District 2. At that time, incumbent Shae Sortwell held 12,788 votes while challenger Renee Gasch held 8,898 votes. From Manitowoc County, 5,320 voters chose Sortwell and 3,089 chose Gasch.

District 2 includes large portions of southern Brown County, including most of the city of De Pere, and north in Manitowoc County, including the city of Two Rivers.
