Capitol Civic Centre brings kid show ‘Pirate School’ to stage Saturday: “Pirate School,” a madcap, swashbuckling solo variety show created and performed by veteran New York physical comedian and actor David Engel, will take the stage at Manitowoc’s Capitol Civic Centre at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Rated G, the show is part of the Capitol’s Family Series.

A news release describes the show as follows: “The riotous, interactive pirate escapade of Pirate School satisfies children’s universal curiosity for the briny buccaneers of yore while promoting everyday polite behavior and social courage. It is a mischievous blend of improvisational clown theater and features a signature brand of boisterous full-audience participation. Parents will marvel as their kids become ‘good pirates,’ swaggering out of the theater transformed by this heartwarming family show.”

Tickets are available starting at $10. Visit cccshows.org to purchase tickets or call the box office at 920-683-2184. The Capitol Civic Centre is at 913 S. Eighth St., Manitowoc.

LaDeDa Books to host meet-and-greet book-signing Saturday: Authors Susan Fink and Mary Schmal will visit LaDeDa Books, 1624 New York Ave. in Manitowoc, for a meet-and-greet book-signing event from 10:30 a.m. until noon Saturday.

Manitowoc author Fink has written an accessible guide for anyone struggling with life’s stressors, such as schedule management, parenting, social media use and alone time. Each chapter looks at a myth about self-care, shares the author’s personal challenges and identifies misconceptions. Scriptural explanations, questions and prayer prompts are included with blank spaces for interactive use. The book’s easy-to-use format is conducive to personal and group study.

Schmal, a Milwaukee teacher and writer, hopes her Children of the Light Series inspires readers to acknowledge and embrace, as do her character, all nine Fruits of the Spirit. Nine kids, Nine gifts. Nine blessed. Each book in the series focuses on a different Fruit of the Spirit. The stories tell of the adventures, challenges and experiences of nine children and their lives in a remote lighthouse in 1884. Each child learns about the importance of a specific Fruit of the Spirit meant not just for him or her, but for everyone.

Books will be available for purchase and signing on the day of the event.

According to a news release from the bookstore: “Author signings such as this help independent bookstores stay alive and thriving. Therefore, it is respectfully requested that books purchased elsewhere not be brought in for signing.”

Anyone who would like a signed copy of a book but cannot attend the event can call the bookstore at 920-682-7040. Pre-payment is required.

LTC signs new general studies transfer agreement with UW-Oshkosh: Students in the lakeshore area have a new option on their path to a bachelor’s degree thanks to a new partnership between Lakeshore Technical College and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

The partnership agreement allows LTC students who graduate with the college’s new associate of arts or associate of science degree to enroll at UWO with guaranteed junior standing.

The new associate degree programs launched with the start of LTC’s fall term. Both degrees cover general education requirements for a student whose goal is to transfer to a four-year college to earn a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree. Students enrolling in the AA and AS degrees have access to federal financial aid and veteran’s benefits while taking their general education courses at LTC.

LTC’s new general studies degree programs require 60 credits including elective courses that allow students to select courses that appeal to their future career plans. The first group of students in the program began classes Aug. 22.

According to LTC President Dr. Paul Carlsen, UWO is a popular choice among the more than 400 students who transfer each year from LTC to four-year colleges. He said students start on their path to a bachelor’s degree at LTC not only because of the college’s affordability, but also its low faculty-to-student ratio, fewer distractions and location close to students’ homes.
