MANITOWOC - Wisconsin Department of Transportation is planning the following three road projects in Manitowoc County in 2023:

1. Resurfacing of State 42

This multi-year project running from April 2023 to September 2024 will cover 11.2 miles of State 42 from 35th Place in the village of Two Rivers to 350 feet north of Lakeshore Road in the town of Two Creeks.

The project will include replacement of existing metal culverts, replacement of four concrete box culverts, Cold-In-Place recycling of existing asphalt, and placement of new asphalt surface. Other work includes grading, guard rail, pavement marking, curb and gutter, and incidentals.

State 42 will be closed and detoured using two different detour routes for culvert work. Closures will occur between 35th Place and County V, and between County V and County BB. During paving operations, State 42 will remain open with single-lane closures with flagging operations.

North stage detour: Traffic from the north on State 42 will travel west on County BB to County B, then south to County V and east back to State 42. Reverse route for traffic from south.

South stage detour: Traffic from north on State 42 will travel west on County V to State 147, then south to State 42 in Two Rivers. Reverse route for traffic from south.

2. Replacement of U.S. 10 box culverts

This project will run June-August in two locations: the box culvert just west of Long Lake Road/U.S. 10 in the city of Brillion and the box culvert just west of County W/U.S. 10 in the town of Maple Grove.

Construction includes replacing two concrete box culverts. Other work includes grading, guard rail, pavement marking and incidentals.

U.S. 10 will be closed from County PP to County G during work. There will be a hard closure at each culvert location. Culverts will not be closed at the same time. Access will be maintained to businesses and properties.

Detour: Traffic from eastbound U.S. 10 will travel north on County PP to County K then east to County G then south to U.S. 10. Vice versa from westbound U.S. 10.

3. Planting living snow fence on Interstate 43

This is a carryover project from 2022 on 15.5 miles of I-43 in both Brown and Manitowoc counties. It will run March 7 through November on I-43 from State 310 in Manitowoc County to State 96 in Brown County, including all interchanges in the project work zone and the bridge deck on State 96 over I-43.

Work in 2023 includes planting of living snow fence and installing right-of-way fence on I-43.

Traffic impacts will include shoulder closures.

Cooking on an open fire, washing clothes by hand, keeping a diligent eye on the kids while also tending to some worn clothes in dire need of a patch job — this was common life for a woman in pioneer times. And no woman was a stranger to this lifestyle.

But pioneer women also started libraries, classrooms, museums and much more. The program will help people discover the women movers and shakers in Manitowoc County at the turn of the 20th century.
