Manitowoc letter-writers on eliminating electoral college, thanking fish derby supporters

Here are this week’s letters to the editor of the Herald Times Reporter. See our letters policy below for details about how to share your views.

Eliminate the electoral college

Several of the past elections have been won not by a majority of voters for the candidate but by the majority of the electoral college votes.

The electoral college has never been a fair way to decide elections. It should be legislated out of existence before the next national election.

The 2020 presidential election has seen how it can be manipulated illegally for a party to maintain power and disregard the people’s vote. Thankfully, it didn’t work. But it can happen again if our obsolete, unfair system does not change. Every vote in every state must be equal instead of winner-takes-all, state by state.

This will make our elections fair and candidates will be interested in campaigning in every state rather than favoring the “swing” states, such as Wisconsin.

Just five states need to pass legislation to enact the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact to have this happen. These key states include Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Virginia.

To make this happen before the 2024 election, we need to encourage our state senators and Assembly representatives and governor to pass the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. I don’t think any of us wants a replay of what happened in the last election to overturn the will of the people. With this compact, every U.S. voter will have their vote counted equally.

Be part of saving our democracy. Write, email or call your state senator and representative.

Thanks for supporting 44th Two Rivers Fish Derby

Thank you to all who supported our 44th annual Two Rivers Fish Derby sponsored by the Two Rivers Kiwanis Club. The profits are returned back to the community in various ways.

We could not have done this event without the support of many, including: Two Rivers City Council, Two Rivers Parks & Recreation Department, Two Rivers Fire Department, Two Rivers Police Department, Two Rivers Public Works, Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office, Manitowoc Disposal, Lakeshore Express, Wisconsin Nationwide, Machut’s Supper Club and the Two Rivers Wrestling Club.

We also could not have put this derby on without the support of our major sponsors (Fleet Farm, Shoreline Hometown Credit Union, Seagull Marina, Bank First and Fox Communities Credit Union) and major contributors (Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, Krajnik Chevrolet, Carron Net Co., Allstates Rigging, 1st Anderson Real Estate, and LeClair Bros. Heating and AC) and we thank the many businesses that put an ad in our digital derby book.

We greatly appreciate the fishermen who came from all over to fish our derby; without them, there would be no derby.

Thank you to all who came down and supported the derby – buying food on the grounds and enjoying the entertainment.

Most of all, thank you to all the Kiwanis members, their families and their friends who worked toward the success of the derby. Without you, we could not put on this great event year after year.

See you next year for our 45th annual Two Rivers Fish Derby and Festival July 20-21, 2024.

Amy MacMillin

Two Rivers Fish Derby chairperson
