Manitowoc, here’s how long Dewey Street closures will be in place, plus more news: Weekly dose

MANITOWOC - The two outer lanes of Dewey Street at South 39th Street in Manitowoc are scheduled to be closed for the installation of underground facilities for new traffic signals at the intersection as well as new concrete curb and gutter.

One lane of traffic in both directions will be maintained at all times on Dewey Street.

The work is expected to be finished and all lanes reopened to traffic by around April 28.

Lakeshore Church’s annual chicken dinner is April 22: Lakeshore Church, 411 Reed Ave., will host its annual chicken dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 22.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for children ages 4-12, and free for kids 3 and younger. Menu includes chicken, dressing, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, vegetable, dessert of choice and beverage. Takeout is available. Crafts also are available for purchase.

Historical Society seeks volunteers for historic marker cleaning day: Manitowoc County Historical Society is joining a national effort to clean local historic markers during the second annual National Historic Marker Day April 28.

Launched as a grassroots celebration by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, a philanthropic organization based in Syracuse, N.Y., National Historic Marker Day brings people together to maintain local markers by cleaning them and providing an opportunity to celebrate and preserve history.

This fun and family-friendly celebration is held on the last Friday of every April.

Individuals, as well as groups of all sizes, are welcome to volunteer, including families and friends, civic organizations, schools and young groups, to name a few.

Manitowoc Chamber’s ‘Afternoon to Wine Down’ set for April 22: Chamber of Manitowoc County’s “Afternoon to Wine Down” fundraiser for the Ambassadors Scholarship Fund will be 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. April 22 at participating downtown businesses.

Tickets are $25 in advance through the Chamber office, 1515 Memorial Drive, by calling 920-684-5575 or going to chambermanitowoccounty.org. Tickets purchased at the event are $30 and only available at Waterfront Wine Bar, 2 N. Eighth St.

The Chamber of Manitowoc County’s Ambassadors Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to local graduating high school seniors who are pursuing four-year and two-year college degrees.

Three local builders in the running for Badger Craftsman Awards: Three local builders are among the finalists for the Wisconsin Builders Association’s 2023 Badger Craftsman Awards.

Manitowoc’s Bartow Builders, Jim Reif Builders and Mike Howe Builders are among the companies with projects in the running for an award.

People can vote online in nine different categories at www.wisbuild.org/badgercraftsman through May 15.

The awards seek to offer recognition and name the best projects in new home development, construction and remodeling, a news release said.

People are limited to one vote per category per device. Projects will be judged on design, quality of construction, attention to detail, use of materials, price to value, functionality, and creativity.

Historical Society to hold breakfast fundraiser May 6: From 8 until 10 a.m. May 6, Manitowoc County Historical Society will host its 17th annual Homegrown Heritage Breakfast at the museum, 924 Pinecrest Road, Manitowoc.

Guests will discover the variety of quality foods produced in Manitowoc County and celebrate the region’s strong agricultural heritage.

Funds raised at the event help the Manitowoc County Historical Society in preserving and promoting local history.

The breakfast will be prepared by Late’s BBQ and feature a variety of food from local producers, including Humpty Dumpty Eggs, Natural Ovens Bakery breads, Newton Meats, Willow Creek Mill pancake mix, Pine River Dairy butter, local jams, syrup by Hilltop Maple Syrup Camp, and beverages provided by Kwik Trip and McDonald’s.

The breakfast is available while supplies last. Dine-in and carry-out options are available.

Spring cleanup starts April 17 in Manitowoc: Spring cleanup is scheduled to start in Manitowoc with the first pickup of brush April 17. Here’s a full look at the cleanup schedule and what to know.

Cleanup begins with brush only April 17: Pickup of brush only will start April 17 south of the Manitowoc River and then April 24 north of the Manitowoc River, working east to west. Brush consists of clean, woody, vegetative material that’s not to exceed 5 feet in length or 6 inches in diameter and bushes/shrubs without root bulbs.

Yard waste pickup begins May 1: Yard waste pickup, which consists of leaves, thatch, yard and garden waste, will begin May 1 south of the Manitowoc River and May 8 north of the Manitowoc River, working east to west.

Weather could impact dates: The city noted dates are subject to change based on weather. People can find the latest info by going to manitowoc.org or calling the Streets and Sanitation Division at 920-686-6550.

Parking ban in place: A parking ban ordinance will be in place during spring cleanup. No parking will be allowed near garden waste, brush, and/or leaf and raking piles on city streets during the week of pickup between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Vehicles parked near any debris piles will be ticketed.

Things to remember: The city shared the following things to remember about spring cleanup:

  • To ensure pickup, all material must be placed on the terrace (between the sidewalk and curb) by 7 a.m. on the specified Monday of your scheduled week, but not more than two weeks prior to the scheduled pickup week. There will be a minimum $100 charge for material picked up after the initial pickup on your street.

  • Pickup on each street will be one time only for brush and one time only for yard waste.

  • Brush, branches and bushes/shrubs without root bulbs are to be kept separate from raking piles (thatch material).

  • Yard waste consists of leaves, thatch, yard and garden waste.

  • Mixed materials will not be picked up.

  • Pickup is limited to one truckload per property.

  • Bagged materials will not be picked up.

  • Crews will not pick up the following: lumber, garbage, animal droppings, broken concrete, refuse, fill, demolition material, edgings, yard debris greater than 6 inches in diameter or longer than 5 feet in length, including stumps, roots, or shrubs with intact bulbs, or debris in bags, buckets, or garbage cans.

  • Materials will not be picked up on uninhabited/vacant lots.

What to do if you need additional pickups or choose not to participate: City residents who choose not to utilize the city pickup or wish to have additional pickups may contact a private hauler or take brush/yard debris to the county compost sites.
