Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA offers $1K sign-on bonuses and hiring on the spot — plus more news in weekly dose

MANITOWOC - Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA is offering $1,000 sign-on bonuses for new staff, including early childhood education teachers, meal preparer, lifeguards, swim instructors, youth sports coach, active older adults fitness instructor, 4K wrap teacher and teen mentor.

The Y also will be hosting open interviews in which successful candidates will be hired on the spot, pending reference and background checks.

The open interviews will be at the Y, 205 Maritime Drive, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and 3 until 6 p.m. today and from 9 until 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Interested candidates can take a résumé and/or fill out an application on site, a news release said.

The Y, which employs 140 staff, said it has about a dozen additional positions to fill. Available positions can be viewed online at mtrymca.org/employment.

In addition to the sign-on bonuses and open interviews, the Y is highlighting other benefits such as paid time off for part-time employees, $12-per-hour minimum wage, 8% retirement plan, free Y membership, reduced program fees, discounted childcare fees and more.

► LTC to host ‘Explore Energy Careers for Females’: Lakeshore Technical College is hosting “Explore Energy Careers for Females” from 9 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. Wednesday on its Cleveland campus.

The career exploration event will focus on opportunities for females in the wind and solar industries, as well as the heating, ventilation and air conditioning industry.

Hands-on activities will include building and testing a small-model wind turbine, examining solar panel positions and output, inspecting components of a home heating and cooling system, and identifying home energy efficiencies.

► MPU open house Thursday: Manitowoc Public Utilities will hold an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday at its facility, 1303 S. Eighth St., Manitowoc.

A welcome booth will be set up in the employee parking area off Madison Street behind the main office.

Tours of the water treatment plant, wastewater treatment facility and power plant will be offered along with interactive and educational exhibits. Bucket truck rides will also be featured.

Representatives from Focus on Energy, Partners for Community Development and some city departments will be on site with displays. Focus on Energy will assist customers in signing up for one of six free Energy Savings Packs and will have a popup retail site as well. Electric vehicles will also be displayed.

Wastewater treatment reps will be collecting old mercury thermometers. For every mercury medical thermometer turned in, a free digital thermometer will be given in exchange. There will also be an area to recycle old CFL lightbulbs. Educational partners from Lakeshore Technical College and Inspire Wisconsin will be present as well.

► Whitelaw church marks 150th anniversary: St. Michael’s Parish in Whitelaw will mark its 150th anniversary starting at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The community is invited to help celebrate.

The celebration will feature bounce houses, arts and crafts, a coloring contest, cornhole boards, bingo and a scavenger hunt.

A special recognition mass at 4 p.m. will be held with a potluck supper to follow. Attendees are asked to take a dish to share at the potluck.

The church is at 110 W. Menasha Ave. and was founded in October 1872 after Thomas Zipperer donated the 3 acres of land where the church now stands. In 1881, a one-room schoolhouse was built on the site and the teachers included the Salvatorian Sisters of St. Nazianz and the Sisters of the Order of St. Francis.

► Lakeshore Church to unveil renovations: Members of Lakeshore Church, 411 Reed Ave., Manitowoc, will host an open house from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The United Methodist congregation has completed an extensive construction and renovation project including new sanctuary and gathering space, fellowship hall, kitchen, community garden, and Garden of Remembrance, as well as a new sewing room and woodworking shop, both available for public use.

The open house will include light lunch, children’s activities, gifts and door prizes.

► Civil War gravestone cleaning planned: A Civil War gravestone cleaning will be from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 1 at Evergreen Cemetery, 2221 Michigan Ave., in Manitowoc.

Those wishing to participate are urged to watch for signs that will direct them to the Grand Army of the Republic marker, which will have a sign-in table and welcome area.

All participants must complete a liability waiver that will be available on site. Participants younger than 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver. Waivers can also be found online at www.manitowoc.org/evergreencemetery by clicking on Volunteer Forms.

Approximately 230 Civil War gravestones are in Evergreen Cemetery. In 2021, at the first Civil War gravestone cleaning day, 25 Civil War gravestones were scrubbed with dish soap and water in an effort to make the names of Civil War veterans readable.

► Candlelight vigil planned for Mental Illness Awareness Week: During Mental Illness Awareness Week, which is Oct. 2-8, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) of Manitowoc County will host a candlelight vigil at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at Painting Pathways Clubhouse, 1226 Washington St., Manitowoc.

Guest speaker for the vigil will be licensed professional counselor Rebecca Richards, who will discuss dual diagnosis, treatment and coping strategies. The public is welcome to attend.

Mental Illness Awareness Week was established in 1990 when Congress dedicated the first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week. This year’s theme will be “Together for Mental Health.”

► Curd Crawl fundraiser Oct. 8: United Way Manitowoc County’s second annual Curd Crawl fundraiser will be 3-8 p.m. Oct. 8 at seven downtown Manitowoc establishments.

Those participating establishments include BRIX, Courthouse Pub, The Fat Seagull, Moore’s Irish Pub, Pizza Garden, The Wharf (food by Broken Plate) and Wrap It Up.

New this year are themed raffle baskets at each stop along the Crawl, “I Got Cheesy” stickers available for purchase, and a more simple voting process of overall favorite curds via a QR code.

Each wristband is $10 and includes 10 free raffle tickets.

Wristbands, extra raffle tickets and “I Got Cheesy” stickers can be purchased online and picked up at United Way or purchased at UnitedOne Credit Union at either its South 10th Street or Walmart branch in Manitowoc.
