Manpower Inc. of Southeastern Michigan is marking its 60th anniversary this year.

Manpower has a Monroe office at Elm Avenue Coworking, located on the corner of E. Elm Ave. and N. Macomb St.

The firm offers custom staffing, training, outsourcing and consulting services in Monroe and Washtenaw Counties.

“Our local franchise just celebrated 60 years servicing Washtenaw and Monroe Counties,” Annie Edmunson, director of operations for the local Manpower, said.

The company is based in Ann Arbor, but serves many businesses and workers in Monroe County.

“We’ve serviced hundreds of customers and placed thousands of employees over the years,” Edmunson said. “We actively work with approximately 100 employers located in Monroe County, with most of them being manufacturing businesses, but also municipalities, transportation, healthcare and banking/finance.”

The agency also has placed thousands of area workers.

“We employ approximately 2,000 employees a year who reside/live in Monroe County,” Edmunson said.

In 1962, Carolyn Gatward and her husband bought a Manpower franchise and opened the first temporary help service in Southeast Michigan, said her 2020 obituary. Gatward died at age 91.

Manpower Inc. of Southeastern Michigan is a locally owned franchise and is part of the parent company ManpowerGroup.

“Our goal remains the same (as in 1962), to connect job-seekers with meaningful work while partnering with so many wonderful area organizations,” the company said.

A Monroe office was opened in 1975.

“That’s when we began staffing for Detroit Edison at Fermi,” Edmunson said. “Throughout the years, we have occupied a variety of office spaces while also providing much support from our franchise headquarters in Ann Arbor. During the height of the COVID pandemic, the Monroe business operated remotely/virtually (with continued support from our Ann Arbor office). Currently, we are utilizing a coworking space, Elm Avenue Coworking. We generally have office hours at Elm Avenue on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but customers, candidates and employees can reach us anytime via phone.”
